Our Process
At Ubika, we take pride in the quality of each garment we produce and take the utmost pleasure and care in training our seamstresses and tailors to pay attention to detail which they thoroughly enjoy as well.
Patterns
Each piece of garment receives a lot of thought at Ubika. We ensure each style is designed keeping the woman of today in mind, focusing on comfort, quality and a sense of responsibility. Each design starts out as a sketch on paper where we take into account our customer’s desire for contemporary spin on classic designs. The pattern comprises the actual cut of the garment, with the type of sleeves, prints and embroidery type.
Cut & Tailor
Once the pattern has been created, we then pick the right fabric, linen, cotton, cotton silk for the right flow and fit. Our high quality fabrics are sourced from all over the country, cottons from Gujarat and linens from This is then taken to our very talented tailors who then create a sample for the design.
Design
Once the sample gets approved, it gets sent to Lucknow where we liaise with our craftsmen to choose the blocks for the detailed embroidery. The blocks or “chappe” used in Chikankari work are wooden blocks with motifs of floral and Mughal association. This is where the garment gets ready to be worked on by the seamstresses who then fill up the designs with handmade Chikankari embroidery.
Our design team liaises with the craftsmen to carefully select the threads that the seamstresses will use as part of the embroidery. The threads chosen get attached to individual garment with the picked motif and get sent to the village.
Embroidery
Each piece is hand embroidered using the Chikan art that the women have been taught by their mothers and grandmothers. This is what makes each piece unique. Some pieces depending on the skills of the artisans get complete in a week, while others may take longer. We try and make sure that one seamstress works on the entire garment to ensure continuity and flow.
Tailor Finish
Once the embroidery on the garment is complete, the piece comes back to the tailor who then completes sewing the garment. At this stage we take care of any final adjustments to ensure the garment meets the standards. Elements like buttons, patches, labels get carefully stitched on by the tailors.
Quality, Wash & Iron
Each stitch, design, motif, embroidery and button is meticulously reviewed. It then gets washed to ensure the garment you receive will not shrink after you wash it. This also takes care of any colour bleed that may occur. Once the garment is washed, it is dried following the instructions for the fabric used. It is then steam ironed, ready to be packed and shipped to you.
